Polyurethane (PU), whose full name is polyurethane, is a polymer compound. It was produced in 1937 by Otto Bayer and others. Polyurethane has two categories: polyester type and polyether type. Soft polyurethane mainly has a thermoplastic linear structure. It has better stability, chemical resistance, resilience and mechanical properties than PVC foam materials, and has less compression deformation. Good heat insulation, sound insulation, anti-vibration and anti-virus performance. Therefore, it is used as packaging, sound insulation, and filter material. Rigid polyurethane plastic has light weight, excellent sound insulation, heat insulation performance, chemical resistance, good electrical performance, easy processing, and low water absorption. It is mainly used as a structural material for construction, automobile, aviation industry, and thermal insulation. The properties of polyurethane elastomer are between plastic and rubber, oil resistance, abrasion resistance, low temperature resistance, aging resistance, high hardness and elasticity. Mainly used in the shoe industry and medical industry. Polyurethane can also be used to make adhesives, coatings, synthetic leather, etc.
Polyurethane foam is divided into two types: hard foam and soft foam. It has excellent elasticity, elongation, compressive strength and flexibility, as well as good chemical stability. In addition, polyurethane foam also has excellent processability, adhesiveness, heat insulation and other properties, and is a cushioning material with excellent performance. 
The production of polyurethane materials has spread throughout North America. It is reported that the overall average annual growth rate of the North American polyurethane foam market is expected to reach about 6%. It is estimated that by 2020, the growth areas are mainly concentrated in the residential and industrial spray polyurethane foam application market, as well as military applications. In addition, polyurethane will also be used in the medical industry to treat wounds in a timely and effective manner.
